Dear Snarky – Help Me Get Out of Vacation Plans With Friends

dear_snarky_logoDear Snarky,

My husband and I have been invited to join some other friends on a spring break trip to Cabo next month. The problem is while we like these friends we don’t like them well enough to go on a vacation with them.  They’re fun to hang out with, but I’m not sure about all of us spending a week together

How do we say NO without hurting anyone’s feelings or letting on that we don’t like these couples THAT much?

 Signed, No Bueno

Dear No Bueno,

I wish all my Dear Snarky letters were this easy. Hello, are you not acquainted with the best excuse of all times? The excuse that guarantees you a free pass out of almost any situation?

It’s the “Oh wow, we’d love to go, but I don’t think we can swing it financially that month.”  Yep, blame your bank account. It’s the equivalent to being a child and telling your friends that you can’t do something because your mom won’t let you.Screen Shot 2016-02-24 at 8.27.09 AM

There’s only two ways this excuse won’t work. One, your ego won’t let you publicly admit that you can’t afford something and if that’s case then you’ve got bigger problems than getting out of vacationing with friends. Number two is if you’re super loaded and no one’s going to believe you don’t have the dinero.

That said, I’m going to put my money on the most likely scenario that you’re not wealthy and can easily pull off the “we can’t afford it excuse” or the “we’re really trying to up our savings game etc etc. Now go forth and get yourself out of that vacation.
